Session Abstract: “It used to be that you could see the business, touch the bricks, sample the product and the biggest problem with holding a meeting was finding a free boardroom. The first decade of the 21st century has been about enterprises dissipating, virtualizing and breaking into widely spread parts. As the enterprise fragmented geographically (even into the home) the first parts of traditional operations that vanished were the face-to-face meetings and the printed, hand delivered memos. The tools that supported this first step mainly dealt with the small, seemingly unimportant parts of an enterprise’s operations that nobody really noticed going away. As we move to the next decade, the big things are disappearing. A data-center is not a rounding error in a budget — it can now be removed from the balance sheet entirely. Cloud IT infrastructure now can take on many forms – internal clouds, public clouds and hybrid clouds. Companies like Joyent are enabling this second was wave of enterprise virtualization and making all three cloud scenarios a reality! Over the next ?? minutes we will explain what is making this flexibility possible and how you can leverage this evolution to gain agility, flexibility and capability in an open, loving cloud.”
Rod Boothby is VP of Business Development for Joyent. Joyent has a public cloud offering, joyent.com as well as software (cloud control) for organizations to manage private clouds.

Abstract: “We all saw the recent headline: “Obama Inauguration Brings BBC and CNN to a standstill”. In these hard economic times companies are increasingly relying on the Web as their main sales channel. Its use has moved from a convenient option to something endemic. Expectations for reliability (availability & speed) have become much higher. We want the latest updates and headlines, the best sources, and the most answers in the shortest time possible, and with the least amount effort and constraint. Amazon recently estimated that 100ms of latency cost them 1% of their book sales. As such, Web performance has become the new customer service.
Understanding what the user experience will be before you "go live" is more and more critical. Performance or stress testing is no longer an option, it’s an imperative. In this session we will discuss the value of Cloud Testing and real world case studies of customers using it to ensure Web reliability and performance.”

Session Abstract: “Cloud computing has dramatically lowered the barriers to entry for new web entrepreneurs wanting to start innovative businesses. However, the lack of interoperability, consistency and security concerns across services keeps many businesses from adopting. There have been several calls for standards to help make services from different cloud providers interoperable and ultimately more useful and secure to enterprises.
Uncertainty abounds, with questions such as "Are standards really needed?" "Who should be involved?" “Can the cloud ever be secure?” and "What are potential consequences of working in the cloud?"

Session abstract:
“You are on cloud 9. You are ready to go lights-on in your new virtual data center. But wait: virtualization changes everything when it comes to security. Some gaps are obvious, such as the elimination of separation of duties, or the lack of visibility into the virtual network. Some issues are more subtle, such as temporal attacks against crypto. This talk will describe what gaps are introduced in the move from physical to virtual specifically where security is concerned, and prescribe specific steps to ensure security and compliance for production deployments.
Specific topics to be covered include:
• Recommend strategies for updating in-house security and compliance best-practices guides to incorporate and protect virtual infrastructure.
• An analysis of the new virtualization threat surface and what new policies should be introduced to prevent, detect and control risks and violations.
• Configuration of the virtual network for security and visibility, even over Vmotion and over VMware port groups.
• Enforcement of separation of duties, least privilege and change management in the virtual data center (currently not part of most virtualization platforms).
• Examination of the risks of VM Sprawl and establishment of programs and policies for managing this risk.
• How you can guarantee your cloud implementation is even more secure than your pre-cloud analogue.”

Session abstract: “The relevance of cloud computing to enterprise IT is not well understood. Like the Internet, cloud computing did not come out of blue. Dr. Zhou’s keynote will discuss the historical evolution of cloud computing including the adoption of grid computing to share IT resources in large enterprises. This presentation will focus on internal/private clouds suitable for most business applications utilized in an enterprise environment. Dr. Zhou will also describe the evolutionary steps required to adopt cloud computing and the potential hurdles to be overcome. Using production cases, he will discuss how cloud computing is not only saving costs but also driving competitive advantage.”
Songian Zhou is a co-founder of Platform Computing. This session focuses on establishing a private, infrastructure-as-a-service cloud. What follows are notes I took during the session, and some screen shots of Dr. Zhou’s slides.
Dr. Zhou begins with cloud computing benefits, expresses his view that cloud computing is the third generation of IT, and highlights three pathways to cloud computing.
